The very first Logan McRae novel in the No.1 bestselling crime series from Stuart MacBride.
DS Logan McRae and the police in Aberdeen hunt a child killer who stalks the frozen streets.
Winter in Aberdeen: murder, mayhem and terrible weather…
It’s DS Logan McRae’s first day back on the job after a year off on the sick, and it couldn’t get much worse. Three-year-old David Reid’s body is discovered in a ditch: strangled, mutilated and a long time dead. And he’s only the first. There’s a serial killer stalking the Granite City and the local media are baying for blood.
Soon the dead are piling up in the morgue almost as fast as the snow on the streets, and Logan knows time is running out. More children are going missing. More are going to die. And if Logan isn’t careful, he could end up joining them.

As if you were there, too
A new author for me. I love the precise descriptions, during the whole book I felt as I were there with the characters. Very intriguing plot. Will definitely continue reading this series

Adoro il personaggio di Logan McRae, così autentico con le sue debolezze , paure e sentimenti. Bello e divertente, nonostante le atmosfere invernali e cupe della Aberdeen.
This is the first book in the DS Logan series however i am late to the beginning as i have started the series with the second book.
4.5 stars (rounded to 5 stars)Hot Dog! I have myself another fabulous series to dig into. I love discovering these older series as there will be books waiting for me whenever I get the urge to revisit the characters. In addition, there is something about some of these more âvintageâ novels that you do not see in books published today. Some sort of âITâ factor that is difficult to explain.Cold Granite is the debut novel and a great start to Mr. McBrideâs Logan McRae collection. The setting is Aberdeen, Scotland. What a totally miserable place. Itâs like chapter 20 and STILL raining. At least it finally stops. When we reach December. Then it doesnât stop snowing. Iâll say one thing though–Mr. McBride is such a creative guy that I could not help marveling at how many ways he is able to mesmerizingly describe the never-changing weather. He makes sure we never forget where we are and how wretched an environment it is. Made me feel cozy in my nice warm house with a steaming cup of coffeeDS McRae is coming off sick leave after being seriously wounded during his previous case. Heâs supposed to be easing back in. Right. For the next 2 weeks, he does not get any time off as he chases down the suspects of multiple abductions and murders. Do we have a serial killer? Or are these crimes even related? The plot is fast moving and complex. It seemed like every time I thought I was starting to figure things out, yet another âeventâ would occur, messing up my thinking. This book totally engaged me with all that was going on.The characters are very well written. Even all the potential baddies are well drawn, despite the reader not actually getting into their heads. Roadkill was my fave, along with Desperate Doug (what a loser). I loved the cops. McRae had my sympathy almost right off the bat. His two DIâs are a treat. DI Insch, who I wasnât sure about at first, eventually won my affection. Heâs a gruff guy, but has a good heart. His penchant for eating sugar-laden treats is very entertaining, especially to a sugar fan such as myself. I learned a lot about English confectionaries, many I would love to try myself; I feel bad they are not available to me here across the pond. Then there is DI Steel. Oh my. She doesnât have a huge part in this story, but enough to intrigue me. I hope to see more of her tough stuff in future books. WPC Watson, assigned to drive McRae around, is a gem. Her nickname is Ball Breaker. Enough said. Oh, and Colin Miller, the hated (by his colleagues) crime investigator from the local newspaper–I loved seeing the evolution of his relationship with McRae.The writing is top notch. Period.I am thrilled to have finally discovered Stuart McBride. I was totally captivated by Cold Granite and look forward to reading more of this series. I rate this book 4.5 stars. I cannot help but round up to 5 stars despite the fact that gives me minimal room to award future books a higher rating. Oh well, it gets what it deserves. Needless to say, I highly recommend Cold Granite to all crime fiction/thriller fans.
Grippingly written but unremittingly and incrementally sordid.I gave up halfway, fearing for my continued mental health!RogerD
This is a raw, gritty and at times extremely gruesome story about a dysfunctional police force and their attempts to solve a number of murders. No punches are pulled in this novel; the descriptions of some of the crime scenes leave nothing to the imagination, the banter between the police investigating the crimes is at times very down to earth. However, offsetting this are moments of real pathos and elements of quite dark, dry humour. The setting is also very atmospheric – Aberdeen in winter is cold, wet, bleak and dismal. In short, be prepared as this novel takes you on quite an emotional roller coaster ride. The story opens on the day Detective Sergeant Logan McRae returns to duty following a long period off recuperating from injuries sustained in a previous case. He is immediately told he must lead an investigation into the murder of a child that had been abducted. Soon after more children are reported as missing and then the body count starts rising – and it is not just children. At first McRae and his colleagues appear to be making little progress in solving the cases. Is this because the culprits are particularly smart or is it because his colleagues are particularly inept? There is an amazing cast of characters. The hero of the story is the indestructible Logan McRae. ‘Helping’ him is Detective Inspector Insch, a sweet devouring boss who does not suffer fools gladly; Detective Inspector Steel, a foul-mouthed, chain-smoking female; Inspector Napier from Professional Standards who appears to be on a mission to catch McRae doing something wrong; WPC Watson, whose nickname is ‘ball breaker’ and with whom McRae becomes rather infatuated, and McRae’s ex wife, Dr Isobel MacAllister, the police pathologist. In addition to the police there is a cast of villains, some of whom you would definitely not want to cross (e.g. the geriatric hitman), and others including an investigative journalist and a mentally ill council worker. In fact there are plenty of characters you need to keep track of in this story! The narrative follows the police investigations into the crimes. The pace is unrelenting and there are many twists and turns and red herrings to put the reader ‘off the scent’. Once hooked however, you’ll not be able to put the book down. But, be warned, this is not a book for anyone who is easily offended or has a sensitive disposition as parts of it are quite gory.
Fantastically written and faced paced a crime novel to get your palms as sweaty as Anderson and your heart thundering right along with DS Logan ‘Laz’.The latest book in the series In The Cold Hard Ground is, believe me if you will, more fast paced and packed with wicked dark humour MacBride is known for. Keep reading friends!
