Alice, Il cappellaio, Il bianconiglio.
Leggo sempre con piacere i romanzi di Valentina Piazza perché sono sicura che vi troverò quel guizzo di originalità che renderà la lettura soddisfacente.Originalità che non manca in questo romanzo che è palesemente ispirato all’opera Alice nel paese delle meraviglie di cui non prende in prestito solo nomi e personaggi, ma che viene incastonato nella ricostruzione storica con l’inserimento come personaggio secondario del suo autore Lewis Carroll e viene rivisitato nello svilupparsi della trama.Alison Wheeler è una giovane borghese dinamica, acuta, curiosa, ingenua ma sveglia. Vive nell’agio e nella ricchezza ma non facendo parte della nobiltà oppressa da mille regole sociali è cresciuta intellettualmente libera. Nel giorno dell’inaugurazione della metropolitana di Londra, accompagnata dalla governante Beth e dall’amica di sempre Lady Caroline, si imbatte nei due uomini che, ognuno a modo suo, le aprono la porticina che la conduce all’età adulta.Damian Alexander White Duca di Grafton, potente, affascinante, sicuro di sé, ovviamente bellissimo, è il sogno di tutte le giovani nubili e non solo. Anche per Alison rappresenta un ottimo partito che le consentirebbe l’ingresso dalla porta principale nelle più alte sfere sociali. Si sente lusingata dalle attenzioni del Duca ma la sua coscienza le suggerisce che non è oro tutto quello che luccica.La sua mente ritorna spesso all’altro personaggio incontrato, Mr Solomon Turner, il sarto del Duca, uomo dal fascino misterioso, pacato, sfuggente, sfigurato da una ferita in viso che lo rende ancor più attraente.à un personaggio ambiguo, dalla dubbia condotta morale, dipendente da sostanze psicotrope a causa dell’utilizzo del mercurio per la realizzazione di cappelli. Uomo sensibile, capace di profondi sentimenti, che si è elevato dal nulla grazie alle capacità creative e al sostentamento economico di Damian, prova da subito una profonda attrazione per Alison da cui lo separano innumerevoli barriere sociali.Alison si ritrova a combattere una battaglia tra ciò che è socialmente vantaggioso ed accettabile per sé e la propria famiglia e il sentimento che cresce esponenzialmente nel suo cuore.Come sempre lo stile di Valentina Piazza riesce a tenere incollati alle pagine, la scrittura è efficace, evocativa, diretta. Riesce a intrecciare armoniosamente ricostruzione storica, narrativa e creazione.La trama è ben ordita ed equilibrata dall’inizio alla fine. Unico appunto, mi è mancata in quest’opera la freschezza, l’esuberanza che accompagna la sua genialità e che di solito provo nel leggere i suoi romanzi, anche quelli più impegnati.
Il Bianconiglio insegue Alice, ma lei invece insegue il Cappellaio Matto
Sono trascorsi quasi cinquant’anni dall’inizio di questa stupenda storia ma questa volta partiamo tornando a Wonderland Hall.La giovane Alison Wheeler è tutta febbricitante: l’inaugurazione per la prima linea metropolitana di Londra sta per iniziare e assiema alla sua migliore amica Caroline Turner e la sua governante Beth si fa largo tra la folla per raggiungere la stazione sotterranea. Allison molto diversa dalle ragazze londinesi della sua età , lei è intraprendente, dice quello che pensa e soprattutto non si fa fermare da niente – d’altronde suo padre, Abraham Wheeler, un magnate delle caldaie per ferrovie, che anche preso parte al progetto della metropolitana, non l’aveva cresciuta come una signorina frivola ma come una donna che doveva spronare il suo intelletto per farsi strada nella vita, anche se lui spera di farla sposare con un nobile per così che non abbia problemi in futuro nel caso lui non ci sia più, visto che è rimasto vedovo quando Alison era piccola -.Ma ci sono anche altre due persone che stanno per prendere parte a questa novità che segnerà il futuro del progresso: Il Duca White, Damian Alexander White quinto Duca di Grafton, si ritrova a condividere la carrozza per il giro di prova della metropolitana assieme ad Alison, la signorina Caroline e la signora Beth e non può fare a meno di restare affascinato da questa ragazza, che differenza delle altre trova interessante questo evento, e cerca di stabilire un contatto con lei. Al loro gruppo si aggiunge anche il suo amico e confidente Solomon Tucker (lo abbiamo conosciuto che era appena nato alla fine Il Duca e il Giglio). Il Duca sembra non riuscire a staccare gli occhi da Alison, che invece sembra più interessata a Solomon, che a detta del Duca conosce molti dei suoi segreti persone alcuni inadatti alle orecchie delle signore, così per cercare di destare il suo interesse la invita a uno dei suoi ricevimenti in maschera a Wonderland Hall.Allison non capisce perchè il Duca neutra tanto interessa per lei, inoltre lei appartiene alla borghesia mentre lui è un nobile e questo la rende ancora più perplessa – soprattutto perché ha sentito voci non proprio lusinghiere sul Duca e su quello che è successo a Wonderland Hall a diverse ragazze – ma suo padre invece pensa che dovrebbe almeno dargli una possibilità e così con l’invito e l’indirizzo del sarto di fiducia, e anche segreto, per farsi realizzare un bel vestito per la serata. Per lei è una sorpresa scoprire che non sono il sarto di fiducia del Duca è Solomon. Anche se i due appartengono a due classi sociali diverse Alison non ha potuto fare a meno di pensare a lui e anche Solomon sembra essere sinceramente attratto da questa ragazza.Solomon ha costruito la sua reputazione di sarto grazie al sostegno del Duca a cui deve molto, purtroppo una delle peculiarità del suo lavoro è quella di lavorare con diverse sostanze e una di queste, che pian piano lo sta avvelenando, è il mercurio, la cui esposizione e lo sta lentamente facendo impazzire tanto che molti lo chiamano “il cappellaio matto”. Anche se il Duca gli ha chiesto di realizzare un abito che valorizzi la bellezza di Miss Wheeler lui non può fare a meno di temere per la reputazione della giovane per la quale anche lui si sente attratto. Oltretutto lui, con il suo rango sociale non può sperare di essere per lei qualcosa di più di un semplice sarto. E cerca di dimenticare ciò che sente in ogni modo.Quando le regala una gatta randagia, incinta per di più, Solomon teme di aver fatto un’azzardo e sebbene gli costi la allontana da sè – più che altro quando le descrive che cosa rappresenta il personaggio di Alice al quale si è ispirato per il vestito che le ha confezionato – e Alison si sente offesa, ma non prima che lui le consigli di “non seguire il coniglio bianco”, ciò che sente per lui non la abbandona.La sera del ballo, dove il Duca indossa un abito da Bianconiglio, Alisonn viene ammirata e invidiata da tutti i presenti e il Duca ballando con lei le fa capire il suo chiaro interesse nei suoi confronti. Fortunatamente Solomon la salva con una scusa così i due si allontanano, sotto lo sguardo geloso di Damian White; per i due rivedersi è una prova assai dura che li porta quasi a baciarsi ma quel momento viene interrotto allontanandosi nuovamente.Nel frattempo Allison è preoccupata per la sua migliore amica Caroline che da tempo ha smesso di parlarle e anche di vederla (non immaginando che il suo iniziale allontanamento è stato causato dalla gelosia che lei ha provato poiché la sua amica aveva l’attenzione del duca che lei tanto sperava di ricevere), finché il padre di lei Lord Turner chiede di visitarla poiché dalla sera del ballo la ragazza sembra essere caduto in uno stato di depressione; Alison va a trovarla e capisce che c’è qualcosa che è accaduto quella sera ma la sua amica non vuole parlarne tuttavia intende scoprirlo. E mentre tenta di venire a capo di questa cosa non può fare a meno di continuare a pensare a Solomon.Contemporaneamente il Duca White nonostante continui a cercare di avvicinarsi a Alison lei si fa negare e come un cacciatore che punta una preda questo lo stuzzica e inizia a desiderare di chiederla in moglie al prossimo ricevimento che darà ordinando addirittura a Solomon di realizzarle un vestito ancora più bello per l’occasione. Il sarto pur non volendo perchè i suoi sentimenti per Alison continuano a tormentarlo consiglia al Duca, senza fargli capire ciò che sente, di non trattare Alison come le altre e avere rispetto nei suoi confronti.Originariamente Alice era colei che seguite il Bianconiglio nella tana del Paese delle Meraviglie ma questa volta lei ha deciso di scegliere di seguire il Cappellaio Matto, dando inizio a uno storia diversa dalle altre.
I segreti di Wonderland
Il libro mi ha perplesso. Si respira un’atmosfera inquietante. Nulla da dire sul modo di scrivere dell’autrice, sarà che siamo abituati a leggere romance frivoli, stucchevoli e l’amore è fatto di sospiri e struggenti attese dell’amato. Qui invece c’è di fondo un amore travagliato che non dona gioia per quasi tutto il libro. Boh, non mi ha entusiasmato
I segreti di Wonderland Hall
Il fascino di Alice in Wonderland ha cavalcato l’onda del tempo ed, ultimamente, è ritornato con prepotenza. Questa versione si svolge nel periodo in cui è stato scritto e il libro è ospita, nella sua trama, la presenza dell’autore stesso, Lewis Carroll. La trama è coinvolgente, la narrazione è fluida e i personaggi sono ben delineati.
Attendevo con ansia questo romanzo e le mie aspettative non sono state deluse! Valentina Piazza ci trasporta in una Londra seducente, fatta di balli, palazzi e abiti meravigliosi. à anche una Londra pericolosa e infida, nella quale perdersi per sempre, una Londra nel pieno dello sviluppo tecnologico dellâOttocento, in cui sogno e realtà si fondono. Le atmosfere oniriche e ricercate di questo libro avvolgono il lettore come in un abbraccio e lo conducono in un viaggio in bilico tra lucidità e pazzia, nel quale nulla è come sembra. Ho amato i personaggi del romanzo e non vedo lâora di ritrovarli nel prossimo volume della serie!
