‘A charming – and sharp – love story about what it means to fall for someone who is your polar opposite’ Sunday Telegraph
_______________________________________________________
Lucy married just the sort of man you might expect: a university graduate who runs his own business. Unfortunately he turned out to have serious dependency issues.
Joseph is shaking off the memory of his last date, a girl who ticked all the right boxes and also drove him up the wall.
On an average Saturday morning in a butcher’s shop in North London, Lucy and Joseph meet on opposite sides of the counter. She is a teacher and mother of two, with a past she is trying to forget; he is an aspiring DJ with a wide-open future that maybe needs to start becoming more focused. Lucy and Joseph are opposites in almost all ways. Can something life-changing grow from uncommon ground?
Nick Hornby’s brilliantly observed, tender and brutally funny new novel gets to the heart of what it means to fall headlong in love with the best possible person – someone who may not be just like you at all.

Just like you
Graet novel as most of Nick Hornby books
Pleasant, witty, enjoyable read
While it may not be a masterpiece, this is a pleasant, honest, and direct novel that tackles the theme of “unbalanced” romantic relationships (in terms of age, race, social background, culture…) in a non-trivial way. It’s not a new topic, and the developments arealso partly predictable because the obstacles faced by these types of couples in our society are always the same: the judgment of others, groups of distant friends where the partner feels like a fish out of water, family disapproval, different ways of having fun, different political ideas… Yet, the way Lucy and Joseph move through these inevitable difficulties seems natural, uncontrived, and believable even in the most improbable aspects (the forty-year-old accepted andadored by the group of twenty-somethings at the club; the inexplicable yet immediate sympathy between Lucy’s children and Joseph’s mother…).The characters, as always in Hornby’s novels, are portrayed with a mixture of affection and irony that makes them human and relatable. This applies not only to the protagonists, both adorable in their frailties, but also to many of the secondary characters, each with their own quirks: Lucy’s children, totally obsessed with football and Playstation, Jaz with her hilarious vulgarities, and Emma Baker with her embarrassing sexual talk in the butcher’s queue, are really amusing. The author does not seem to have a thesis to prove (relationships between opposites work / don’t work), but rather reminds us that it isstill worth enjoying a present of happiness without having to look too far ahead.
Recensione Just like you
Io ho letto il libro in lingua originale pur essendo italiana. Ho avuto qualche difficoltà con la comprensione di alcune espressioni idiomatiche o colloquiali. Nel complesso ho però trovato il libro divertente e la trama non banale.
Bellissimo
Hornby in grande spolvero.
Flat and uneventful
It just seemed to drone on. Characters did not have much depth. I did not walk away inspired or with a warm feeling or with indignation… I walked away from this book as flat and emotionless as its writing. Disappointing.
I’ve enjoyed Nick Hornby’s movies and novels and this one is no exception. I laughed so much! It amazes me how he can so totally get the issues of a middle aged woman and a young black male and still manage to write realistic dialogue for two young boys. I love books with lots of dialogue. It helps me get to know the characters. Bravo, well done! Thank you for a wonderful read.
I loved this book so much; I fell hard for the characters and miss them now. The Brexit and Trump election backdrop was woven so well into the narrative too. Like all good novels, it has also made me think about my own life. Living in the present is a strong theme in this book and one of the main things I will take away from it. Thank you Nick Hornby yet again!
I used to be a fan of Hornby, because his characters always seemed real and believable. Unfortunately lately it seems that he writes hoping to sell the rights easily for some silly American romcom. The topic of this book could be so interesting: the relationship of a white woman in her 40s having and a black man in his early 20s, but I simply didn’t buy it. I don’t understand why it started at all. The characters are so poorly developed that I couldn’t get their motivations and, why they are together, we cannot get to know them deeper and what’s going on with them. Besides all the other characters are just a pile of cliches or were just placed there to add some paragraphs to the book, they had no importance at all, like that Michael person that simply disappears or her sons that could be perfectly replaced by dogs as didn’t add anything to the plot and their mother doesn’t seem to care about them or about anything at all actually. And nothing really happens. We read a lot of descriptions of what meat she’s buying, what is served for dinner or tea, but nothing adds to the plot. Even when people start talking about them being together or when she realizes that her sons know about them, nothing! No tension, no funny thing, no plot twist, no development, simply nothing. Hornby witty writing has been replaced here for some f* words probably trying to reach an audience that think that this is bold writing.
This was an easy, light read that also made me think about current affairs and relationships in a thought provoking funny way.
To all those who think that romance may be possible between two good people, even if it’s hard. And to those who like to live one day at a time.
