un saggio con la narrativa di un romanzo
prodotto elaborato in modo chiaro e divertente da uno scrittore e un antropologo, spiega in modo semplice l’evoluzione, la natura del fenomeno della morte.consigliato vivamente.
Una forma simple amena y muy jocosa de explicar con inteligencia y de forma entendible esa interesante relación del antropologo y el escritor, muy interesante, encantado con su lectura.
Cumplen el propósito de hacer divulgación cientÃfica de una forma asequible a los humanos comunes y corrientes, se juntan dos extraordinarios profesionales y logran lo que mis maestros no pudieron y me hicieron odiar, detestaba a Darwin no por su excelente contribución sino por la dificultad mÃa en comprenderla.Pienso que es vital para la sociedad la divulgación del conocimiento cientÃfico y que esta forma de emprenderlo (cientÃfico traducido por un escritor) es una forma muy viable de que lo comprenda la mayorÃa de las personas.
âLa muerte contada por un sapiens a un neandertalâ es todavÃa mejor que el primer libro de Millás y Arsuaga. Son trescientas y pico páginas que lees casi del tirón, con ganas de que hubiera cientos más. Menos mal que los dos ya prometieron un tercer volumen.

Hay una desproporción en todo esto: he leÃdo bastantes libros de Arsuaga, desde «La especie elegida» en adelante, mientras que éste es el primero que leo de Millás.Ambos se reparten el trabajo: Millás escribe (con un punto de ironÃa, que le sienta bien al conjunto) y Arsuaga planifica el contenido del libro al son de las salidas que él mismo programa y en las que encuentran ejemplificaciones de lo que el paleoantropólogo quiere contar sobre evolución. Millás es el escriba atento y el preguntón del tándem, el Watson de la pareja, mientras que Arsuaga se reserva el papel de sagaz Sherlock Holmes, que ve huellas de la selección natural (y sexual) a cada paso que dan.Por cierto, he encontrado aquà un Arsuaga menos académico, más Ãntimo y en pantuflas, e incluso algo deslenguado (dentro de un orden, entiéndaseme), que en ninguno de los libros que conocÃa de él con anterioridad. También Millás da a entender que Arsuaga es algo ciclotÃmico y competitivo.En el libro se discuten con suficiente profundidad y eficacia las teorÃas complementarias sobre el envejecimiento de la acumulación de mutaciones de Peter Medawar y de la pleiotropÃa antagonista de George C. Williams. Según la teorÃa de Medawar, la senescencia se produce por la acumulación de «polvo debajo de la alfombra»: las mutaciones con efectos tardÃos no son barridas a tiempo por la selección natural, como sucede con el alzhéimer y otras enfermedades neurodegenerativas. De acuerdo con la teorÃa de Williams, el envejecimiento es la factura que paga un organismo con genes que lo hacen especialmente vistoso y apto para reproducirse durante la juventud, pero que tienen asimismo consecuencias perniciosas retardadas que se manifestarán cuando ese individuo supere la edad reproductiva, como sucede con los trastornos de salud ligados a la menopausia o la hinchazón de la próstata.Sin embargo, he echado en falta la incitante teorÃa de la relación entre la aparición del sexo (meiótico) y la muerte. Pensaba que la cosa iba a suscitarse en el último capÃtulo, en que se habla del sexo. Pero la presencia del sexo se explica aquà por la variabilidad que aporta a la hora de hacer frente a los patógenos (teorÃa conocida como «hipótesis de la Reina Roja»).Pero el sexo también, de acuerdo con algunos biólogos (como Lynn Margulis o George C. Williams), introdujo la muerte en la historia evolutiva hace unos setecientos millones de años. La muerte surge en la historia de la vida unida estrechamente a la reproducción sexual y, en realidad, es la otra cara de la reproducción sexual. La muerte hace acto de presencia cuando se produce dentro del organismo la especialización entre células sexuales o germinales (potencialmente inmortales) y células asexuales o somáticas, que mueren cuando muere el cuerpo que forman. Las células somáticas estériles lo son por razones parecidas a las que llevan a la formación de castas estériles en los insectos sociales o las ratas-topo lampiñas.Haciendo una concesión a la Pachamama, que tanto deplora Arsuaga, la distinción entre una lÃnea germinal y una lÃnea somática dentro de las células del organismo se podrÃa presentar como una defensa biológica de la vieja teorÃa de la reencarnación.Hay una parte inmortal en nosotros, que no es el alma, sino más bien las «espirales inmortales» de que habla Richard Dawkins (los genes), que están contenidos en las células sexuales (y también en las no sexuales, sólo que aquà en dosis doble); y una parte mortal, que es el cuerpo, formado por las células somáticas que se «autoinmolan» y se convierten en callejones sin salida evolutivos «para» crear un estuche corporal con el que proteger a sus hermanas las células sexuales o gametos, que son los que pueden pasar a la generación siguiente, «reencarnándose» en un nuevo cuerpo; en realidad, formando ese cuerpo por mitosis a partir de la fecundación y formación del zigoto o primera célula diploide del nuevo organismo.Esta relación entre sexo y muerte, entre Eros y Tánatos (dicho freudianamente), no es comentada en parte alguna del libro de Millás y Arsuaga, tal vez porque este último no cree en la muerte programada, y es cierto que las células somáticas son «células para la muerte» (expresado al modo heideggeriano). De todas formas, hubiera estado bien hacer alguna referencia a esta llamativa y provocadora teorÃa de la relación (contraintuitiva) entre el sexo y la muerte.
