The only downside to this book is that it is not the first in a delightful series. Violet is very charming in her naivete and her bravery in spite of that makes one really root for a happy outcome. We need more of her story.
This turn of the century novel set in Hastings on the south coast of England is a surprisingly amusing and original story about a candid and bold young woman who has been neglected by her father since the disappearance of her mother 10 years earlier. Desperate to settle his ageing (28 year old) daughter into marriage he parades a succession of unsuitable & sometimes untrustworthy suitors in front of her. But Violet yearns the independence of paid employment and her motherâs stories have convinced her that the marriage bed is not a pleasant place to be.Nobody knows how her mother disappeared from the Pier ten years earlier, but Violet is convinced that Lily is still alive. She decides to hire private detective Frank Knight but soon she becomes uneasy about his approach and believes that he will besmirch her motherâs reputation. With independence and courage, she finds a better but most reluctant detective, Benjamin Blackthorn, and persuades him to educate her for employment. The energetic writing style and inventive plot is rich in humour and yet it also reflects the attempts, by some young women at that time, to step out of the shadows of their menfolk. The characterisation is entertaining and convincing and I am hoping there will be a sequel to this lively tale.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Many Laugh out loud moments. What a great characterI hope there are many more to come
No life for a lady by Hannah Dolby was different and it had me hooked. I loved that it takes place in the 1800s where woman would viewed a certain way. Violet is a 28 year old female that everyone talks about because she is not wed. However, violet is not interesting in being married and turned into a house wife. Violet want to be a detective and solve mysteries. Violet needs help with solving a mystery and reaches out to a retired detective who tells her no, so she has no choice but to hire a sleazy detective. Then, Violet decides to solve her own mystery.I would recommend this box if you are looking for a mystery/detective book with a little bit of romance.
No Life For a Lady is such a fun read! Violet is a very likeable heroine. She has decided not to marry but to make her own way in the world. However, this is not the done thing. As the title says, finding employment and using your brains is not considered a suitable life for a lady. Being a lady not all it’s cracked up to be and Violet is rather frustrated by the constraints placed upon her by polite society.Over the course of the book, Violet meets many kinds of ladies from all walks of life and discovers that being a lady can mean many different things. It was fun to see that some of those who were most helpful to her were most definitely not what society would deem genteel ladies!I really admired Violet’s determination, curiosity and her desire to be independent. As well as wanting to make something of her life, she also wanted to solve the mystery of her mother’s disappearance ten years earlier. In hiring a detective, she becomes one herself almost by default! Although perhaps the biggest mystery she has to solve is what goes on in the marital bedroom, something she fears due to something her mother told her. In this aspect she did seem rather naïve for a 28 year old woman but then we are talking about a very different era.No Life For a Lady is a very charming read filled with warm humour, mystery, a little danger and a little romance. I hope this isn’t the last we see of Violet Hamilton and I look forward to reading more of her adventures as a lady detective.
