Sneak Peek
“I feel proud to think Lupin does resemble Mr. Huttle in some ways. Lupin, like Mr Huttle, has original and sometimes wonderful ideas; but it is those ideas that are so dangerous. They make men extremely rich or extremely poor. They make or break men. I always feel people are happier who live a simple unsophisticated life. I believe I am happy because I am not ambitious.”
Synopsis
An ordinary clerk living in late Victorian Era England, Charles Pooter and his wife Carrie are stuck deep into middle class society. Man of modest ambitions, he is content with his ordinary life and is satisfied with his occasional chance to rub shoulders with the upper class at the Lord Mayors Ball.
He daily frets over things like shirt collars, boot black, his housekeepers’ shortcomings. Yet he always seems to be troubled by disagreeable tradesmen, impertinent young office clerks and wayward friends, not to mention his devil-may-care son Lupin with his unsuitable choice of bride. Try as he might, he cannot avoid life’s embarrassing mishaps. And yet you can’t help but like him as he strives to retain his dignity, grace, and composure in the face of life’s small yet annoying trials.
In the bumbling, absurd comedy, yet ultimately endearing figure of Pooter, the Grossmiths created an immortal comic character and a superb satire on the snobberies of Victorian society from the point of view of the middle-class working man and his family.
