A brutal killer is on the streets of Rome.
He leaves no trace. And shows no mercy.
A series of gruesome murders leaves the police force in Rome reeling, with no real clues or hard evidence to follow. Assigned to the case is Sandra Vega, a brilliant forensic analyst, struggling to come to terms with the crimes and her own past. Sandra’s shared history with Marcus, a member of the ancient Penitenzeri – a unique Italian team, linked to the Vatican, and trained in the detection of true evil, means that the two are brought together again in the pursuit of a malignant killer.
Soon Marcus and Sandra notice the emergence of a disturbing pattern running alongside the latest killings – and every time they think they have grasped a fragment of the truth, they are led down yet another terrifying path.
A sensational new literary thriller from the bestselling author of The Whisperer, this novel captures the beautiful atmosphere of Rome and explores its dark and hidden secrets.

I love Donato Carrisi’s world of creeping evil in the Eternal City. His discovery of the Penitenzieri is brilliant, the unfolding of its twists as unexpected as anything I’ve read in modern crime mystery, I didn’t want it to end. However, I have one issue with the Hunter of the Dark, having previously also loved the Lost Girls of Rome. In the first book, we are introduced to the transformist, a sadly abused child brought up as an experiment, as well as a fake Interpol agent who involves himself with Sandra Vega, the female protagonist. The mystery as to who these are, and how they relate to Marcus and further revelations is something we’re waiting to be revealed in the next book – but they aren’t mentioned. The story of the Hunter of the Dark is excellent, but afterwards I felt rather dissatisfied. I even wondered if he’d forgotten the thread. Despite this, I couldn’t take off a star – the world of underground Rome is just too moreish, and perhaps the answers will be revealed in the next episode.
This was a breeze to read. I finished this in 3 days (if I had more time, I would have finished it much quicker than that). There was a lot of history involved in this novel that was fictionalized. Mr. Carrisi took many old criminal cases in Italy and wove them throughout the novel in addition to including real entities such as the Penitenzieri and created one hell of a novel, the likes of which Dan Brown could learn a thing or two (or more) from. For all intents and purposes, Mr. Carrisi gave away the plot in the beginning of the book, but I still managed to want to hang on and see how things were going to unfold. I was not disappointed in the least! For some people, this may be a hard read due to the cultural gap, but if you stick with this, you will be glad you did. This is well worth the read for the history alone! – Donna Di Giacomo.
Well written, different crime novel, leaves you quessing till the end. I would try another of his books.
WOW! If you have read other books from Carrisi, you will NOT be disappointed with this one. I was not expecting that end. I could not stop reading from the beginning until the end. I finished in a few days and it is a very thick book. Great author, and I am hopping he continues writing about Marcus and Sandra.
