A laugh-out-loud cautionary tale (for children and grown-ups) written by Catherine Emmett and illustrated by David Tazzyman, bestselling illustrator of the Mr Gum series and You Can’t Take an Elephant on a Bus.
Digby David slammed the door,
and dumped his bag upon the floor.
“Daddy! I DEMAND a pet,
Why have I not got one yet?”
Digby David wants a pet, but not just any pet – it has to be TWICE as big as Reuben’s guinea pig and even better than Lily Jean’s cat. Digby David’s Daddy does what he’s told, and soon Digby has a guinea pig, which he loves with all his heart… for half a day. Digby demands bigger and better, Daddy’s hair gets greyer and greyer, and when Digby’s dog gets boring too, he insists Daddy buy him… a gorilla!
A hilarious tale with a ‘be careful what you wish for’ message, especially if you wish for a gorilla and don’t look after it properly.

I love this author. My four year old had a blast listening to this playful plot and I take great pleasure in reading it to him. Sweet, delightful rhymes. I wholeheartedly recommend.
We all loved King of the Swamp, so were keen to see what the second book by this new author would be like. It was totally different from her first book, but still so much fun. The story is great, and highly amusing. The whole family loved it, not just the 4 year old. His brothers, my husband and I have all taken it in turns to read it to him a few times and we’ve only had it a couple of days. The rhyme is great and the illustrations are fab. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to read a funny book to their children. Well done Catherine Emmett! You are our new favourite author!
SPOILERS….We really didn’t enjoy this story. The main character has a horriblyle attitude towards other people, as well as animals. Unfortunately, by the end of the book the this rude kid is labeled as simply an animal himself and this is how the story concludes. Not a shred of emotional intelligence, reasoning or communication in this pretty outdated view of children and character building.
I’m a big fan of both Catherine Emmett and David Tazzyman so I’ve been awaiting this one eagerly and it did NOT disappoint! It reminds me of a book from when I was little with that line about “always keep a hold of nurse for fear of finding something worse”. I love cautionary tales – and this one has SUCH a fun punishment, without being too dark, plus great rhyme. There are so many funny touches in the art that you’ll only spot on a re-read….and children WILL want to read this again and again!
Really fantastic little book. Funny, well-illustrated (with real children’s pictures in it as well), and rhyming. What more could you ask for?
